About Mahjong
Mahjong (also known as Mahjong Solitaire or Shanghai Solitaire) is a single-player matching game that uses a set of mahjong tiles. The objective is to clear the board by matching identical tiles.
While Mahjong typically refers to computer game Mahjong Solitaire, it’s not to be confused with the original “Mahjong” game, which is a four-player board game originated in China. If you are looking for the original Mahjong game that can be played online, we recommend Mahjong Soul or Chinese Mahjong.
How to Play Mahjong Solitaire
Objective
Clear the entire board by removing all tiles. Match two identical tiles to form a pair and remove it from the game board.
Rules
-
You can only remove free tiles. A tile is considered free when:
- No other tile is on top of it.
- At least one side(left or right) is open, so the tile can slide out to the left or right. If a tile is blocked on both sides, you cannot remove it.
You can enable “Highlight free tiles” option in the settings menu which will turn unavailable tiles gray, making the free tiles easier to spot.
-
You can only match tiles with identical images, except for flower and season tiles.
-
Flower and Season tiles are unique, and any flower tile can be matched with any other flower, and any season tile with any other season.
-
If no moves are available, you can click the Shuffle button to rearrange the remaining tiles.
Locked Position
All boards generated by the game are solvable. However, the order in which tiles are removed can lead to a locked position where no moves are available.
If this happens, you can:
- Use Shuffle to rearrange the remaining tiles and continue playing.
- Use Undo to step back through your previous moves, one move at a time.
Setup
Mahjong Solitaire is played with a total of 144 tiles, arranged into a layered layout. All tiles are placed face up at the start of the game.
Tiles and suits
Mahjong tiles are divided into different groups of suits: circles, bamboo, symbols, winds, dragons, flowers, and seasons.
Circles, bamboo, and symbols are numbered suits. Each suit is numbered from 1 to 9, and each tile appears four times. These tiles can only be removed by matching two tiles with the same image.
Winds are special tiles representing the four directions: East, South, West, and North. Each wind tile appears four times and can only be matched with the same wind tile.
Dragons are special tiles and come in three types: Red, Green, and Blue. Each dragon tile also appears four times and can only be matched with the same dragon tile.
Flowers and seasons are special tiles. There are four different flower tiles and four different season tiles, and each appears only once. Flower tiles can be matched with any other flower tile, and season tiles can be matched with any other season tile.

Mahjong Tips and Strategies
While Mahjong is a relatively easy and relaxing game, there are a few things worth keeping in mind if you want to win more often.
-
Order matters. The order in which you remove tiles can affect the outcome. When multiple pairs are available, it can be smart to leave some free pairs for later. Keeping tiles on the board gives you more flexibility if another tile of the same image becomes available, and helps avoid locking the board.
-
Prioritize which pair to remove. When multiple pairs are available, prefer the pair that unlocks the most tiles. This gives you more options on the next move.
-
Don’t rush easy matches. Just because a pair is available doesn’t mean you should remove it immediately. Some pairs are better used later when the board is more open.
-
Plan two moves ahead. Before removing a pair, look at what it will unlock. If the move doesn’t improve your position, consider another option.
-
Clear top layers early. Tiles stacked on higher layers are harder to deal with later. Removing them early helps prevent blocked stacks near the end of the game.
-
Use hints to scan the board. The Hint button cycles through all available matches. Even if you don’t take the suggested move, it’s a quick way to see which tiles are currently playable and plan your next step.
