How to play Mahjong Solitaire?
The goal of Mahjong Solitaire is to clear the playing board by matching tiles with identical images. When two tiles are matched, they both will be removed, and more tiles will get unlocked. You win the game when all tiles are removed. It’s that simple! There are, however, some rules as to which tiles can be matched.
Rules for matching tiles
For tiles to get removed, they must both have the same image engraved on them and be “open”. An “open” tile is a tile which:
- Is not blocked by other tiles above it
- Is not blocked on at least one side horizontally, meaning it can slide out to the left or to the right.
In the examples below, only highlighted bamboo tiles can be removed, because all tiles underneath are blocked.
In these examples, circle tiles in the middle cannot be removed because they are blocked from both left and
right sides by bamboo tiles.
In the last example, all tiles can be removed. Notice that in the second example, even though the middle tile is
blocked from the top and bottom it still can be removed because it's free on horizontal sides.
Flower and Season tiles
The game rules state that you can only remove tiles with the same picture, but there is an exception. There are two sets of special tiles called "flowers” and "seasons". Any flower tile can be matched with any other flower tile and season tile with any other season tile. But you can’t match flower tiles with season tiles. In total there are 4 flower tiles and 4 season tiles, each appears only once during the game.

Notice that these tiles are marked with letters F for flower and S for season tiles, to make it easier to distinguish them.
Unsolvable Position
Although our game generates only solvable layouts, it might happen that during the game you will choose the wrong pair of tiles which leads to an unsolvable layout position. An unsolvable position means there are no more “open” tiles that can be matched with each other.
If you end up in an unsolvable position, the easiest solution is to use the shuffle button, which will mix tiles and allow you to continue playing.
Another option is to use the undo button. By using undo button you bring back tiles that you removed one at a time. If you reached an unsolvable position, make a mental note of all open tiles you have. Then, use undo button until you find one of these tiles, at which point you should choose to remove another tile combination.
Layout Setup
Mahjong Solitaire game starts with 144 tiles shuffled and stacked on top of each other into a pyramid-like shape, called layout. There are many different layouts, but the classic and most popular is the Turtle.
End of the game
You win the game when all tiles have been removed. There is no time limit so you can go at your own pace, but if you’d like to track how long it takes you to win mahjong games you can enable timer in the settings. After winning the game you will be awarded a star for completing the layout. You can track the best times and completed layouts in the layout selection menu.
Mahjong Solitaire Strategy
While mahjong is a relatively easy and relaxing game, there are some things you might want to look out for. Here are some tips on how to win more Mahjong Solitaire games:
- Order Matters - aimlessly removing tiles can be certainly fun and relaxing but can quickly lead to an unsolvable position. If you have one pair of tiles open, and you don’t see other open tiles of the same image anywhere on the board, it might be a good idea to leave them for later and remove other tiles instead. This way you will minimize your chances of getting stuck.
- Unblock Priority - often during the game, you will be in a situation where you can remove many different tiles. How do you choose? It’s a good idea to remove a pair that will free more tiles. You can count blocked neighbors of each pair and the pair with the highest number of blocked neighbors should be removed first.
- Go from top to bottom - focus on clearing tiles from the top-most layers first. Big stacks of tiles can be hard to remove at the end of the game, so make sure you get rid of them in the beginning.
- Don't trust hints too much - The hint tool is useful when you can't find the next move, but it doesn't guarantee the best move possible, as there is no game analysis happening and the program only finds an open pair. Use it at your own risk when you can't find a pair, but be aware that using hint can also lead to a unsolvable position.
Controls
To select a tile, move your mouse cursor over a tile and click. If you are on mobile, just tap on the desired tile. If the tile is “open” it will be highlighted in green. If the tile is blocked, you will see the corresponding animation.
