What Is Mahjong Titans?
Mahjong Titans is a single-player tile-matching game based on the classic Mahjong Solitaire format. The goal is simple: clear the board by pairing up identical tiles until none remain.
The name became popular through a version bundled with Windows Vista, where Microsoft shipped it as “Mahjong Titans.” Microsoft has since rebranded its game as “Microsoft Mahjong,” but the Titans name stuck - today it’s widely used to refer to this style of online Mahjong Solitaire game.
How to Play Mahjong Titans
Objective
Remove all 144 tiles from the board by matching identical pairs.
Rules
- Free tiles only. A tile is free when nothing is stacked on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open.
- Match identical tiles. Two tiles must have the same image to be paired and removed.
- Exception - Flowers and Seasons. These are special bonus tiles. Any Flower tile matches any other Flower, and any Season tile matches any other Season, even though the images differ.
What to Do When You’re Stuck
If no valid moves remain, you have two options:
- Shuffle - rearranges the remaining tiles into a new solvable configuration.
- Undo - steps back through your previous moves one at a time.

Mahjong Titans uses a standard set of 144 tiles divided into these groups:

Strategy Tips
Clear top layers first. Tiles buried in stacks become harder to reach as the game progresses. Removing top-layer tiles early gives you more options later.
Think before matching. Just because a pair is available doesn’t mean you should take it immediately. Removing a pair at the wrong time can block tiles you’ll need later.
Prioritize tiles with fewer matches. If two tiles of the same type are available and one of them unlocks more tiles underneath, remove that pair first.
Use the hint sparingly. The hint button cycles through all currently available matches - useful for scanning the board, even if you don’t take the suggested move.
Plan two moves ahead. Before removing a pair, check what it uncovers. If the next tile isn’t helpful, consider another move.
